A Little Coal City Band History
http://www.coalcity.lib.il.us/coalmining/pages/coalcity/somerville.html
"Mr. William Somerville was an accomplished musician, specializing on clarinet. He devoted considerable time to organizing and directing the Coal City Marine Band which became a leading musical group in this area for many years. He was also a member of the Pullman Marine Band and a guest soloist with John Sousa's famous band on several occasions."
All band directors across the US give out the John Phillip Sousa Award every Spring to one band member who excels in leadership, dedication and musicianship. John Phillip Sousa's work in one of the main reasons that we have have band programs in schools and communities. It is amazing to think of this Coal City connection to that time in history.

Band Camp Changes
Marching Coalers,
I hope you all are having a great summer! I know my family and I have. The girls have been swimming, starting piano lessons and going to the zoo. It has been great to spend so much time with them. Well, if you have driven by the High School, you have seen the big changes that are in store for us as we return for band camp. With those changes, we will have to make some adjustments for band camp. All the times are the same; we are just going to change the location. The Elementary School has been gracious to welcome us over for camp. We will have places to practice indoors and our own practice field.
When you come to band camp, you will need to make sure you are prepared. Things you will need are: your instrument, any supplies (reeds, oil, sticks…), comfortable shoes (no sandals or flip flops) suntan lotion, water bottle and appropriate clothing.
Here is our schedule:
